Why Do We Wear Costumes On Halloween?

Halloween is an old tradition that almost every household participates in. But how did it start and why do we wear costumes?

Service Uniform

It’s hard to figure out the exact origins of Halloween, but if you look online you’ll find stories from ancient pagan, Celtic, Catholic and Roman traditions. One thing all of those traditions have in common is that Halloween is a thing of superstition.

Take the ancient Celts for example. One theory explains that Halloween originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, where people would light bonfires and dress up in costumes to scare off roaming ghosts and spirits. They believed that on Halloween, ghosts came back to Earth and would haunt anyone who left their homes. So they wore masks in hopes that the ghosts would mistake them for other spirits.

Well it’s 2013, and there aren’t many people left who believe in ancient spirits. Today people wear costumes for fun and amusement.

At Service Uniform, that makes perfect sense to us. Costumes are like uniforms, they make you feel like a different person. Superhero costumes are popular this time of year because people love to feel powerful and in control. Well, shouldn’t you feel like that every day?

We don’t believe in ghosts, but we do believe that a good uniform rental program should empower you and your company. We’re in the business of renting professional garments and related services to established companies because we’re good at it. We know that our customers demand superior quality products that make them feel like superheroes.

How Uniforms Can Create a Team

The leaves are starting to change and the nights are getting cooler, which means that fall is approaching. Not only are we getting ready for scarves and hot chocolate, we’re also gearing up for football season! Whether you’re a casual game watcher or a die-hard fantasy league commissioner, there’s usually a team you find yourself rooting for.

Teamwork with Service Uniform

In the NFL, each team is its own brand and fans become loyal to their favorite team. Uniforms are not only necessary for fans to tell their favorite players apart, but they also create a sense of pride and identity in the players.

Your employees should also feel the same when they wear their company uniform. At Service Uniform, we work with you and your business to figure out the best look for your employees and company. Your uniform rental program should reflect the dedication and hard work your team does and we can help.

Just like a football team, company success lies within the players. Employees that wear uniforms identify with their coworkers and work as a well trained team. Uniforms create equality in the workplace and promote a healthy team environment.

That First Day of School Feeling

It may have been a while, but do you remember the first day of school as a kid? After a long summer of running around bare foot in shorts and a tank top, mom and dad would take everyone shopping for a new wardrobe. Although new clothes weren’t nearly as fun to show off like the scrapes and scars from your summer activities, new clothes transformed you from a wild child into a proud student.

5 Benefits of Work Uniforms You Don’t Usually Think About

  1. Safety
That’s right – uniforms promote safety in the workplace. Uniforms that require long sleeves and pants can protect an employee from harmful chemicals or substances. Work boots and protective hand and eye wear are also a great investment for employees that work in tough conditions. Uniforms are also a great way for customers to identify employees, which promotes safety and security.
  2. Save money
With the right uniform rental program, your company and employees can save a lot of money. People come and go, body weight fluctuates and work causes natural wear and tear. A uniform rental company can help keep uniforms clean and looking like new. Employees will see how much money they save by not having to go shopping every other month for a fresh wardrobe.
  3. Protect your personal wardrobe from wear and tear
Like we stated above, keeping your personal clothing at home means adding longevity to their lifespan. While employees are active at work, their uniform takes the beating.
  4. Eliminate pressure
We know that we’re all adults, but there’s always that one rule breaker on casual Fridays who wants to stand out. Uniforms eliminate the pressure of shopping for the newest trends and wearing flashy clothing to work.
  5. Team unity
This is such an important benefit. The success of a business lies within its team. Employees that can identify with each other, work together. With uniforms, there is no intimidation when it comes to rank and experience. All employees are equal and this promotes a healthy environment.

Who Wears The Flag?

In the spirit of Flag Day, we did a little research about the American Flag worn on the sleeves of certain uniforms. Have you ever wondered why it’s there or who deserves to wear it?

According to the United States American Flag Code, it is inappropriate to wear the American Flag as a costume or athletic uniforms. The flag patch is for military personnel, firemen, policemen, and members of patriotic organizations. Now this code was established a long time ago, so there has been a little bit of flexibility with this. It is inappropriate to fashion an outfit out of an actual American Flag, but wearing a shirt with the image on it is ok.

Let’s go back to uniforms. Have you ever noticed that the flag appears to be backwards on the right side of military uniforms? In our research we discovered that this is because the blue field of stars should always be in the highest position of honor. Meaning, on a moving arm the highest position of honor is the front. Pretty neat, huh?

Flag Day is a sometimes-forgotten holiday but the meaning behind it is pretty extraordinary. The United States American Flag Code was created because at the time, “the flag represents a living country and is itself considered a living thing.”

Do you own an American Flag? If so, be sure to hang it high and proud.
