August is typically known as the start of back to school season, but there’s another fun holiday taking place this month. National Smile Week is held during the second week of August and we’re making sure that our smiles are extra bright this month to help spread good cheer. Ok, maybe that was a little too cheesy but honestly we’re a happy bunch here at Service Uniform.

It’s Back to School Season

It’s back to school season and although we know that all of you are well past your grade school days, everyone can still feel the excitement of fall in the air. New wardrobes symbolize the start of the school year, but new clothes don’t always have to be the latest fashion outfits found at the mall. Many schools both private and public are adopting uniform dress codes for the student body.

According to the Institute of Education Sciences, between the 2003-04 and 2011-12 school years, the percentage of public schools reporting that they required that students wear uniforms increased from 13 to 19 percent.

According to the website Statistic Brain, 23 percent of all public and private schools have a uniform policy.

The number is rising and we know why! There are many great benefits to uniforms, both for students and for adults in the workforce. Uniforms create a sense of unity, pride, and confidence. It’s been proven that uniforms can enhance the workplace, so imagine what they can do for our schools!

August is Water Quality Month

Water conservation is a big priority for businesses here in Colorado, and we’re aware of our impact on the surrounding environment. August is National Water Quality Month and we wanted to let all of our customers know that as part of our responsibility to the local community, we do what we can to protect the local environment.

At the Service Uniform facility, garments go through an extensive cleaning process before they are returned to you. That means we use a lot of water. Because we don’t want to be wasteful, we treat water that becomes heavily soiled in our plant and reuse 90% of it. We remove approximately 300 gallons of oil a week with our water treatment system, which means we need the most advanced cleaning system in the region in order to return garments to you in great condition.

Not only are we protecting our water supply here at the plant, but also in our homes! American households waste a shocking amount of water every year, and household pollution is one of the main causes. Clean Water Action is an organization that offers a great factsheet on what individuals and families can do to prevent water pollution from spilling out of their homes, including:

  • Not using antibacterial soaps or cleaning products
  • Not flushing unwanted or out-of-date medications down the toilet or drain
  • Not putting anything but water down storm drains
  • Fixing leaks that drop from cars and putting liners in driveways to collect oil and other materials
  • Avoid using pesticides or chemical fertilizers
  • Choosing nontoxic household products when possible
  • Picking up after pets

Keep Cool with Moisture Wicking

If you work outdoors then you know how hot and dry Colorado summers are. To stay safe and healthy, it’s crucial to drink plenty of water and find shade when you can. It’s also important to wear the right uniform. Although it would be great to put on light shorts and a tank top, unfortunately you have a company image to uphold. That’s where we come in.

When working in hot weather, cotton uniforms are not exactly your best friend. Cotton absorbs sweat but does not allow it to dry, causing damp spots in your uniform. If you’re a fan of working out then you may be familiar with wicking fabric. It’s the breathable, moisture absorbing fabric that companies like Under Armour or Nike make their athletic clothing out of. Service Uniform uses Red Kap Touchtex wicking technology to keep you dry and comfortable. Touchtex wicks sweat off the skin and spreads it over the fabric face where it evaporates within seconds.

Wicking means the fabric absorbs sweat by capillary action. Capillary action is the ability of liquid to flow in narrow spaces without the assistance of external forces. In simpler terms, wicking material keeps skin dry and helps avoid chafing and swings in body temperature.

Celebrate the Summer Solstice

How do you like having daylight until 9 PM? Summer is here and we’re excited for the warm weather and long days, but the summer solstice is when the fun really happens. The summer solstice, or Midsummer, occurs when the tilt of the planet’s semi-axis is most inclined toward the sun. Worldwide, interpretation of the event has varied among cultures, but most recognize the event in some way with holidays, festivals, and rituals.

As you know, there are thousands of ancient sites created around solstices and equinoxes that were built to honor our connection to the sun as the source of our light. However, nowadays we mostly recognize the summer solstice as the longest day of the year and the perfect way for us to celebrate is to spend time outside!

This year, the summer solstice falls on Saturday, so spend the day outside with your friends and family. The Colorado Front Range is the perfect place to be to spend the day outside. Most of us are only a short drive away from beautiful hiking trails and scenic picnic areas and there’s plenty of space for everyone. Gather up a group of friends and family and host a barbecue, either at home or in a park. Or spend the day on your bike and tour the city from the trails. If you’re a golfer, play 18 holes instead of 9 because how often do you get to do that?

The summer solstice may be a celebration of the summer months, but it’s our duty to protect employees all year round.
