The Perfect Colorado Road Trip

Summer is a time for vacations and adventures. Here in Colorado, we have access to so many destinations, that we want to hit all of them! Here is our suggestion for putting together the ultimate Colorado road trip.

Glenwood Springs

While we know what a pain driving on I-70 can be, it is home to some of Colorado’s most beautiful views and towns. Be sure to leave on a weekday and you’ll be fine. Glenwood Springs is a must-visit destination, only three hours away from Denver. The majestic Glenwood Canyon offers amazing views of the Rockies and the Glenwood Hot Springs Resort offers a relaxing hot springs to lounge in! While you’re in the Glenwood Springs area, try out other adventures like fishing, rafting, hiking and horseback riding.

Colorado National Monument

Outside Grand Junction, on Colorado’s Western Slope, Colorado National Monument offers gorgeous red-rock formations, steep cliffs and breathtaking vistas. On your way to the National Monument, don’t pass up the many fruit and produce stands you may see on the side of the road–these fruits and veggies are the best Colorado has to offer!

Mesa Verde National Park

Are your kids interested in history? Don’t leave Mesa Verde National Park outside Durango off of your road trip itinerary. One of only 20 World Heritage sites in the US, Mesa Verde offers some of the most spectacular cliff dwellings in America, petroglyphs, and other ancient dwellings all set against a beautiful mountain background.

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve

The Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve offers the largest sand dunes in North America–sand mountains in a sense. Play in Medano Creek that runs along the sand dunes in the summer, hike, ski, sled and snowboard down the dunes all day. Take the family camping in the middle of the dunes! A word of advice: If you’re hiking deep into the dunes, start as early as possible, so the sand and sun doesn’t burn your skin!

Here at Service Uniform, we love going on adventures. These are just a few of our favorite Colorado spots to include on our ultimate road trip. Let us know where your favorite Colorado road trip spots are on Facebook!

America in 1969: Our Birth Year

In 1969, brothers Barry and David Putegnat founded Service Uniform. The third generation to follow in the footsteps of the family laundry business started in 1906 by their grandfather, the Putegnat brothers carried the passion for service to their new uniform rental service.

While today Service Uniform is the first and only company with the technologically-advanced Blue Chip System®, when the company was founded in 1969, there was a totally different atmosphere. Richard Nixon was the President of the United States in 1969, we put a man on the moon, and the very first Woodstock Festival attracted more than 350,000 rock-n-roll fans. It was a time of free thinking where young entrepreneurs were abandoning the traditional career path of working in the family business or finding THE job they would keep until they died. Young people were taking destinies into their own hands and starting their own businesses.

The climate of the uniform industry was much different in 1969 as well. For most service businesses, uniforms represented a type of hierarchy, with different colors and patches signifying rank. Conversely, the men’s business suit was considered a uniform for high-end businesses and sales departments across the country. While men were wearing business suits and working in high rises, women were still working as secretaries, asked to come to work in nice dresses and heels.

In the 1960’s, home washers, dryers and wash-and-wear fabrics made it easier for workers to wash their uniforms at home, and thus the retail laundry and dry cleaning businesses took a dive, forcing laundry businesses to come up with new ideas, thus, uniform rental companies started springing up all over the country.

When the Putegnat brothers came on the scene with the Blue Chip System® the industry was revolutionized. Instead of an inaccurate paper trail of uniform tracking, technology now aided in the collecting, washing and delivery of uniforms, making it better for the customer!

why accuracy is important

Accuracy and reliability: two of our foundational values here at Service Uniform. Accuracy is important to us not only from a business standpoint, but it is important to you, our customers. Here is how our process and our standards affect and improve your business.

The Main Reason Accuracy is Important

What Service Uniform Does Differently

How are we able to guarantee accuracy? Through RFID Technology. Our Blue Chip System® works both with barcodes and RFID chips at the same time. This ensures that we know exactly where your uniforms are at any point in our cleaning process.

How does the Blue Chip System® work? It uses two computer-aided sorts that put garments in perfect route, account, and wearer order. We identify and track each garment the second it enters our facility. We automate service orders on repairs, track garments through the cleaning process, return them to you on time with 100% accuracy thanks to this technology.

Service Uniform employs certified inspectors who proactively inspect each garment, every week. Our inspectors keep an eye out for normal wear and tear so we can proactively replace or upgrade them at no charge to you. It’s included in our service! You can rely on us to get your uniforms to you on time and in good condition because we take extra measures to ensure the best possible product is delivered to our customers.

The Look of Summer Uniforms

If you’re under the age of 10, you can hear his jingle from a mile away. No, we’re not talking about Santa, were talking about the ice cream man! With the summer heat in full swing, who isn’t craving a sweet, cold treat? As an adult his jingle may not be the song of choice, but his 1950s-styled uniform is kindly packaged with summer memories and nostalgia. Here are some of our favorite uniforms of summer and why we love them!

1. Ice Cream Man

That white hat, that button-up shirt, who doesn’t love this classic uniform?! You won’t catch this guy in his usual uniform past Labor Day, the Ice Cream Man takes a big risk wearing all white at his job, but it only makes his job more interesting. Bet you can’t eat an entire chocolate ice cream cone without spilling!

2. Lifeguard

Ah, those hot summer days spent at the community pool. Who can forget those? And not only is a Lifeguards uniform appropriate for their job at the pool, the bright red color keeps swimmers safe as they are easy to see. Even if you have water in your eyes, it’s not hard to miss a big red blob swimming toward you!

3. Golf Caddy

The Roaring 20’s provided America with a big change in fashion style, but they also gave us the classic Golf Caddy uniform of tall argyle socks, jodhopper pants, shirt and tie, and newsboy cap. There wasn’t a golf course in the country that didn’t have a golf caddy walking around the course in this incredible getup. Oh my, how the times have changed!

4. Baseball Umpire

The sport that once held the title of America’s Pastime, Major League Baseball will forever be the best sport to play in the summer. And what uniform is most indicative of this playful summer activity than the Baseball Umpire’s uniform? The padded black top, grey slacks, and protective facemask belong to no other sporting official. When we see an umpire’s uniform, we know it’s summertime!

5. Gardener

As soon as Spring hits, it’s time to break out the gardening uniform to make sure the bulbs get planted on time for May showers. Breathable, fabric gloves, a big straw hat, and often a long-sleeve shirt help protect avid gardeners from too much sun exposure, thusly reminding us that Summer is just around the corner.

Whether your business has a fleet of ice cream trucks, or a fleet of mechanics, Service Uniform has the perfect summer uniform for your employees to stay protected and happy during warmer weather.

Memorial Day: Remembering Why We Celebrate

memorial dayHappy Memorial Day! It’s that time of year, when business put on massive sales, parades are thrown, and speeches are made in honor of all the brave men and women who fought and died to defend our wonderful country in wars past. While Memorial Day carries a great meaning, do we really take time to think about all of the sacrifice that’s been endured on our behalf? Let’s take a look into the history of Memorial Day to better understand why we celebrate this very special holiday every May.

While there are differing opinions on the exact location of the first celebration Memorial Day, arguably the most touching of the stories occurred in Columbus, Mississippi on April 25, 1866. Several women visited a cemetery to decorate the graves of fallen Civil War Confederate soldiers, and as the women were decorating graves, they noticed a handful of neglected headstones belonging to Union soldiers. Though the war ended one year earlier, Union soldiers were still considered the enemy. These women were disturbed at the sight of the bare resting places, and shared the flowers they brought with them on these vacant graves.

In honor of the women’s actions, and several others over the next two years, on May 5, 1868, Major General John A. Logan declared Decoration Day a day to honor the veterans of the Civil war by decorating graves with flowers, just as the women of Columbus had done. Major General Logan chose May 30th as the official Decoration Day because it was believed that flowers would be in bloom across the country on that day.

Inspired by a poem, Moina Michael coined her own poem: “We cherish too, the Poppy red/ That grows on fields where valor led/It seems to signal to the skies/That blood of heroes never dies.” Michael began to wear her own red poppy on Decoration Day and sold them to her friends and co-workers to wear as well. In 1922, the VFW became the first veterans’ organization to nationally sell poppies. The poppies caught on, and in 1942, the “Buddy” Poppy Program sold artificial poppies made by disabled veterans. Red poppies made by disabled veterans are still available every Memorial Day. Have you worn one?

In 1966, Congress and President Lyndon B. Johnson held a ceremony in Waterloo, N.Y., that honored local Civil War veterans. Flags were flown at half-staff, and businesses were closed for the day. Only five years later, in 1971, Congress declared Memorial Day to be a national holiday, celebrated on the last Monday in May, and we’ve been celebrating the holiday every since.

Today, businesses all over the United States close their doors, enlist holiday hours, hold sales, barbecues, rallies and parades in honor of Memorial Day. At Service Uniform, we are incredibly grateful to everyone who has fought to keep our country safe in years past, and those who continue to do so today.  What do you do to celebrate this reverent holiday every year?
